SEYDISFJORDUR, ICELAND

Seydisfjordur was the first town in the east of Iceland to be officially designated as a city in 1895, and today it is considered the cultural capital of the region. Its outsized influence is impressive, given that it became significant while remaining small, with only about 700 residents. This has not, and will not, stop it from boasting Iceland’s oldest power plant in operation, numerous 19th-century buildings, a remarkable rainbow road running through the downtown, and easy access to other regional attractions such as Álfaborg Hill, the Maritime Museum, and Hengifoss Waterfall, which is Iceland’s tallest.
