Portland earned its name through years hosting the British Royal Navy, and that was during its days as a purely natural harbor. It took another 50 years of construction in the half of the 19th century for Portland to become a man-made harbor— of the world’s largest. There is much to see on land, including Minterne House and Gardens, home to famous families the Churchills; Sherborne, built by Sir Walter Raleigh himself; and not too far away is Stonehenge, built by unknown individuals over 5,000 ago.
