Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, UK

Approximately a thousand ago, Vikings ruled the Orkney Islands, and remnants of this period are visible in locations such as Kirkwall’s St. Magnus Cathedral. However, the Vikings were relatively late arrivals. The Orkney Islands boast points of interest dating back to prehistory, such as the village of Skara Brae, which is 5,000 years old, and the Ring of Brodgar, which is almost as ancient. Practically everywhere you look in the Orkney Islands, you will find insights into how people of the past lived, including the comparatively recent WWII-era Italian Chapel and the Victorian-era Balfour Castle. Furthermore, the islands offer more than just history; they are replete with natural wonders such as the Scapa Flow natural harbor, 1,000-foot cliffs, and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
